NEC Women's Soccer Extends unbeaten Streak to Four Games
HENNIKER, N.H.— New England College women's soccer extended their unbeaten streak to four games beating the visiting Smith College Pioneers 2-1 Tuesday evening.
With the win the Pilgrims improve to 3-2-1 overall, while the loss drops the Pioneers to 1-2-0 on the season.
The two teams would battle through a scoreless opening half as NEC's Kristen Walker (Franklin, Mass.) would have the best scoring opportunity firing a shot off the post in the 23rd minute.
Smith would get their best scoring chance early in the second half as Cara Gubbins (Dennis, Mass.) would fire a shot point blank but NEC keeper Alyssa Whitcomb (Littleton, Mass.) would come up with the save.
NEC would break the scoreless tie in the 81st minute of play as Taylor Smith would record her first goal of the season putting in a cross from Kristen Walker giving the Pilgrims the 1-0. NEC would extend their lead to 2-0 just over two minutes later as Walker would take a feed up the sideline from Taylor and beat Smith keeper Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, Fla.)
Smith would not back down as Ellie Theurer (Gainesville, Fla.) would get the Pioneers on the board in the 84th minute putting in a deflection off an NEC defender. The Pilgrim defense would fend off the late surge keeping the Pioneers off the board the final six minutes solidifying the win.
The Pioneers finished the game out shooting the Pilgrims 10-9.
Picking up the win in goal for NEC was Alyssa Whitcomb who finished with five saves. Lindsey Gregor recorded six saves for Smith.
New England College returns to action on Friday, Sept. 16 when they open conference play at Colby-Sawyer College. Smith College will open NEWMAC play hosting Mount Holyoke College Saturday, Sept. 17.
