#12 Washington U. Falls to #4 Wheaton, 2-0, on a Pair of Penalty Kicks
St. Louis, Mo., September 17, 2011 – No. 4 ranked Wheaton College converted on a pair of second-half penalty kicks in a 2-0 victory at No. 12 Washington University in St. Louis in battle of two of the top women's soccer teams in the Midwest on Saturday night at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo.
Senior Jamie Orewiler was taken down in the box on both of the penalty kicks in the second half. Senior Keri Shannon converted the first penalty kick at 65:02, and then Orewiler made it 2-0 with a penalty kick at 87:46.
Washington U. and Wheaton each had 13 shots, but the Thunder had a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Junior Clara Jaques suffered the loss in the goal for Washington U. making two saves.
An evenly played first half saw Washington University outshoot Wheaton, 8-5, in the opening 45 minutes of play. The Bears had one golden opportunity to score in the first half, when a Wheaton defender on the end line saved freshman Lillie Toaspern's left-footed shot at the 10:55 mark.
It was the defensive play of Washington U. sophomore back Kate Doyle that kept the game scoreless. Doyle made her first of two team saves at the 46:17 mark, when she blocked a shot by Katelyn Kishkunas. Just 10 minutes, a header by Val Lelle at the 56:49 mark was cleared off the line by Doyle to keep the game at 0-0.
After Shannon converted the first penalty kick, Wheaton nearly made 2-0 in the 68th minute following a header from Shannon. It was the defense of Washington U's sophomore Becky Berels that headed the ball off the line for the third team save of the game.
Wheaton goalkeeper Hilary Barreto made the save of the contest in the 83rd minute, as he just got her finger tips on a shop by freshman Lillie Toaspern to keep it 1-0. Barreto picked up the win in goal for Wheaton making three saves.
Washington University (6-1) returns to action with a road game at Millikin University on Thursday, Sept. 22. Game time is set for 4 p.m. in Decatur, Ill.
Bear Notebook: Wheaton (6-0) leads the all-time series with Washington U., 9-4-1, in a series dating back to the 1990 season … Wheaton is ranked No. 1 in the NSCAA Central Region rankings while Washington U is No. 2.
