Royals Battle To 1-1 Tie In Double Overtime Against Delaware Valley
DOYLESTOWN, Pa. -- Senior midfielder Christina Cognetti (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) scored Scranton's lone goal as the Royals battled to a 1-1 tie against Delaware Valley College in women's soccer against Saturday afternoon.
After the teams played a scoreless first half, Cognetti put the Royals ahead, 1-0, with her second goal of the season in the 47th minute. The goal was the 10th of Cognetti's career.
The lead held up for just over 11 minutes before Aggies' senior midfielder Ariel Butera (New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land) scored her first goal of the season on an assist by senior forward Dana Gentile (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) at the 58-minute mark.
Royals' sophomore goalie Kelsy McAnelly (West Chester, Pa./Villa Marie Academy) made a pair of saves in the draw, including one in the first overtime to preserve the tie. Scranton outshot Delaware Valley, 32-5, but Aggies' sophomore goalkeeper Julie Burnell (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) made 11 saves to slow down the Royals.
The Royals now lead the all-time series with Delaware Valley, 15-3-1.
Scranton returns to action Wednesday when they host Marywood at 7 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
