Cognetti's Goal Lifts Scranton Past Marywood, 1-0
Senior midfielder Christina Cognetti (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) scored in the 15th minute and The University of Scranton's back line held Marywood in check as the Royals' posted a 1-0 victory over the Pacers in women's soccer at Fitzpatrick Field on Wednesday night.
Cognetti converted a feed in front of the goal from sophomore forward Samantha Russo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) for her third tally of the season and second in the last two games. The assist was Russo's second of the season.
Scranton's backline of juniors Emily Farrell (Telford, Pa./Souderton), Jessica Scisicone (Freehold, N.J./Red Bank Catholic), Noelle Malone (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and Amanda Kresge (Clifton, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) helped hold Marywood to just four shots, including only one on goal. Sophomore goalie Kelsy McAnelly (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) made her only save in the second half.
The Royals (4-1-2) posted their third shutout of the season and are now unbeaten in their last three games.
The victory for the Royals came in the first ever meeting between Scranton and Marywood (3-4).
Scranton returns to action when they travel to Towson, Md. to open Landmark Conference play against Goucher College on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
