Washington U. Defeats Whitworth, 3-0, as Jim Conlon Picks up Win No. 250

Bloomington, Ill, September 3, 2011 — The Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team won its third game in as many days with a 3-0 victory over Whitworth University on Saturday night at the Illinois Wesleyan University Titan Soccer Classic in Bloomington, Ill.

Washington U., who has started 3-0 for the seventh time in school history, has scored 18 goals in the first three games of the season. The Bears are outscoring their opponents, 18-1, and have had eight different players find the back of the net.

"The offense is built upon the team philosophy of everybody getting to the ball," said fourth-year head coach Jim Conlon. "We have been unselfish with the ball, which has given us the opportunity to have lots of different goal scorers."

The Bears held onto a 1-0 lead heading into halftime after outshooting Whitworth, 10-3, with 12 corner kicks. Freshman Lillie Toaspern scored the game-winning goal for the second-consecutive game, finding the back of the net at 5:46 on an assist from sophomore Lauren Steimle.

Senior captain Emma Brown pushed the lead to 2-0 at 54:47 with an unassisted goal. The goal for Brown was the third of the season and 24th of her career, moving into a tie for sixth place on the WUSTL all-time list. Steimle added the insurance goal in the 87th minute to round out the scoring for the Bears.

"The goal of the weekend was to get many of our players playing time to find out where we are as a team," Conlon said. "Whitworth came out in a new formation and put us on our heels at the beginning of the game and we had to respond."

The Bears outshot Whitworth, 19-5, and had a 14-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Junior goalkeeper Clara Jaques made four saves in goal to pick up her third win of the season. Whitworth dropped its overall record to 0-2 after falling to No. 17 Illinois Wesleyan University on Friday night.

Conlon picked up the 250th victory of his career on Saturday. He is 142-73-12 in 12 seasons as a women's coach and was 108-48-10 in eight seasons as a men's coach for a combined record of 250-121-22 (.664).

Washington University will have six days off before hosting the Washington University Classic on Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 10-11. The Bears take on DePauw University on Saturday at 8 p.m., and Rhodes College on Sunday at 4 p.m.

Bear Notebook: Washington U. and Whitworth met for the first time in school history … Jacques is now tied for second all-time with 190 saves and fourth in wins (29) and goals against average (0.67).
