Washington U. Remains Unbeaten With 8-1 Victory Over Calvin
Bloomington, Ill, September 2, 2011 — The Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team erased a 1-0 deficit by scoring eight unanswered goals as the Bears posted a 8-1 win over Calvin College on Friday night at the Illinois Wesleyan University Titan Soccer Classic in Bloomington, Ill.
Washington University, which improved to 2-0, has now scored 15 goals in the first two games of the season. The Bears conclude a span of three games in three days by taking on Whitworth University on Saturday, Sept. 3, at 7:30 p.m.
"The team showed great adversity and character tonight," said fourth-year head coach Jim Conlon. "A talented Calvin team really came out with high energy and got us down 1-0 early. The team responded and played together. It was a good team victory."
Trailing 1-0 in the opening five minutes of play, it took Washington U. almost four minutes to knot the game up following a goal by freshmanLillie Toaspern in the ninth minute. The goal for Toaspern was her second in as many games.
Sophomore Jessica Johnson gave the Bears the lead for good with a goal late in the first half at 39:54. The Bears outshot Calvin 10-2 in the first half and 21-5 for the game.
The Bears put the game out of reach with six goals in the second half. FreshmanAnna Zambricki gave the Bears a 3-1 lead with a goal at 48:58, and then sophomoreLauren Steimle and senior Emma Brownfollowed with tallies to make it 5-1.
Zambricki scored again, her team-leading sixth goal of the season, to push the lead to 6-1. Seniors Lee Ann Felder and Mari Greenberg added goals late in the contest to round out the scoring for the Bears.
Junior goalkeeper Clara Jaques picked up her second win of the year in the nets making one save in 72:29. Classmate Caitlin Heim saw action in the final 17:31 to preserve the victory for Washington U.
