Zambricki's Two Goals Leads Washington U. Past Millikin, 3-1

Freshman Anna Zambricki scored a goal in each half and sophomore Kate Doyle added three assists as the No. 14 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team posted a road victory at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill.

Zambricki netted goals in the fifth minute and the 61st minute to increase her team and University Athletic Association (UAA)-leading total to eight. She also leads the UAA with 18 points.

The Bears struck first at 4:41, taking advantage of a foul by Millikin 40 yards out. Doyle sent a free kick into the box that Zambricki headed in for her first goal of the game. It remained a one-goal game heading into halftime, as Washington U. outshot Millikin 9-2 in the opening half.

It took Millikin (5-1-1) less than two minutes into the second half to knot the score at 1-1. Nikki Smith took advantage of a misplay just outside the Bears' defense, stealing the ball and firing a shot to the near corner past junior goalkeeper Clara Jaques. The goal for Smith was her seventh of the season.

Zambricki gave the Bears the lead for good in the 61st minute, corralling a free kick from Doyle and sending a shot to the far corner to make it 2-1. Sophomore Jen Reed added the insurance goal at the 77:50 mark, heading home a free kick from Doyle from midfield. The goal for Reed was the second of her career.

Washington U. outshot Millikin 24-5 for the contest, and had an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks. Jaques made two saves in the victory for the Bears, who had 19 players see the field.

Washington University (7-1) returns home to host Fontbonne University on Monday, Sept. 26. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Francis Field.

Bear Notebook: Washington U. leads the all-time series with Millikin, 3-0, and the teams met for the first time since 2005 … The victory for head coach Jim Conlon was the 50th of his career at Washington U., and 254th overall as a college coach.
