Washington U. Rallies For 3-2 Win Over DePauw to Remain Unbeaten
St. Louis, Mo., September 10, 2011 — The No. 16 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team erased a 2-0 halftime deficit with three goals in the second half to rally for a 3-2 victory over DePauw University in the Washington University Classic on Saturday night in St. Louis, Mo.
Washington University (4-0) concludes play in the Washington University Classic on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 4 p.m., against Rhodes College. The Bears will host its 2011 Red Card Cancer event on Sunday, with proceeds going directly to the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Cancer Research Center. It took Washington U. just 32 seconds into the second half to trim the lead in half. Following a foul 35 yards out by DePauw, sophomore Kate Doyle sent a free kick into the box that was flicked by senior Lee Ann Felder to senior Emma Brown, who one-timed into the back of the net.
Brown tied the game at 2-2 at the 54:17 mark, as she corralled a loose ball in the box and fired a left-footed shot to the near corner. The goal for Brown was her fifth of the season and 26th of her career, sixth most in school history.
The game remained knotted at two apiece until the 75th minute. Similar to first goal of the game for the Bears, Doyle sent a free kick into the box that landed on the foot of junior Lauren Clatch, who beat DePauw goalkeeper Caroline Kerr with a shot for the eventual game-winner. The goal for Clatch was her first of the season and second of her career.
Washington U. outshot DePauw, 29-4, and had a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Clara Jaques picked up the win in goal making one save, while Kerr made 16 saves in the defeat for DePauw.
DePauw (1-3) struck first in the seventh minute to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. After DePauw was fouled just outside the box, Alex Ehr snuck a free kick from 20 yards out past Jacques for her third goal of the season.
A defense lapse by the Bears resulted in the second goal of the game by DePauw at the 15:43 mark of the first half. Ehr was once again involved in the goal, this time with the assist. She sent a ball into the box to Chloe Jacob, who one-timed the cross past Jaques after being left unmarked.
The Tigers scored on their first two shots of the game and was outshot by Washington U., 15-3, in the opening 45 minutes of play. Kerr made 10 saves in the first half, including a breakaway save on sophomoreJessica Johnson at the 32:52 mark.
In the opening game of the Washington University Classic, Rhodes scored five goals in the first half en route to a 6-0 win over Fontbonne University. Fontbonne hosts DePauw on Sunday at 3 p.m.
