Captains Win Conference Opener Over Mary Baldwin, 6-0
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport University women's soccer team made quick work of Mary Baldwin College (3-2-0, 0-1-0) in the 2011 USA South Conference opener today, winning 6-0 over the Fighting Squirrels. CNU was led by junior Dani Gunderson (Newport News, Va.) with one goal and two assists.
The Captains opened the scoring less than a minute into the game, as Gunderson took a corner kick from the right side. Junior defender Julie Jennings got a header towards the goal, but it was senior Kendall Dishaw who found the back of the net with the second ball header.
CNU then put up a barrage of goals, scoring four more in the span of 4:28. Gunderson assisted on Annemarie Weaver's score 15:49 into the game to trigger the run. Just under two minutes remaining, Carly Utterback touched in her third goal of the season on an assist from Jackie Bond.
The next two goals were scored in just 36 seconds as Gunderson laced a hard shot into the upper ninety from about 25 yards out, followed by Bond giving CNU a 5-0 lead on an unassisted score of her own just moments later.
Christopher Newport added just one goal in the remainder of the game, as rookie Priscilla Harrison connected on a cross from Emma O'Reilly. CNU outshot Mary Baldwin 22-0 in the game, including 14 on-goal.
Defensively, the Captains denied Mary Baldwin from taking a shot in the game, locking up their first shutout of the season. Junior Meghan Gumbs played a scoreless first half, and sophomore Emily Brown was between the posts for the second 45 minutes.
Sunday's contest vs. Shenandoah has been postponed due to heavy rainfall, so the Captains next game will be at Averett on Friday, September 30 at 4:00 pm.
