CNU Drops Ferrum in USA South Action, 3-0

FERRUM, Va. -- The CNU women's soccer team (4-6-0, 2-1-0) bounced back on Saturday, beating Ferrum College (5-5-1, 1-1-0) in USA South action, 3-0.  The Captains earned their second shutout of the season and dominated the action, outshooting the Panthers 24-6.

Christopher Newport struck early, with the eventual gamewinner, when rookie Sarah Perrett found sophomore Emma O'Reilly for the score just 3:07 into the contest.

The Captains took 11 shots in the first half, five on-goal including the winner from O'Reilly. It was her second goal of the season and 13th of her career.

CNU outshot Ferrum 11-3 in the first half. Junior goalkeeper Meghan Gumbs stopped the only shot on-goal from the Panthers, while Ferrum's stopper Caitlyn Deaton made four saves in the first half.

After halftime, the Captains kept pushing and got two more goals from seniors Megan Richard and Kendall Dishaw. In the 63rd minute, senior Shelby Walters passed to Richard for the second goal and less than four minutes later junior Dani Gunderson connected with Dishaw for the final tally.

CNU took 13 shots in the stanza, while holding the Panthers to just three. Gumbs made one save while Deaton stopped three more.

The Captains improved to 4-6 overall and 2-1 in league action. CNU is off next weekend and will return to action at home on October 15 against Methodist.
