Box Score
Saturday afternoon at the Superior High School Soccer Complex, the Yellowjacket women's team made a little history. Okay, so it was more than just a little history. The Yellowjackets exploded offensively, scoring seven times in the second half en route to an 11-0 rout of Mount Mary.
The victory was the third straight for the Yellowjackets, putting them one victory away from tying the longest winning streak in school history. The last time the Yellowjackets won three in a row was September 13-20, 2007, when they defeated Finlandia, Mount Mary and North Central.
The 11-goal outburst sets a school record for most goals scored in a game. The previous mark of 10 goals was reached several times, most recently in a 10-0 win on September 5, 2004, also against Mount Mary.
The Yellowjackets opened the scoring at 7:34 when Mandee Akason (Pine Island, Minn.) scored her first of four goals in the match to make it 1-0. Akason made it 2-0 at 24:18. Fellow senior Andrea McKay (Proctor, Minn.) scored on a header at 36:21 to make it 3-0. Alexa Schiffman (Maple Grove, Minn.) scored her first collegiate goal at 44:32 to make it 4-0 at the break.
In the second half the Yellowjackets kept their foot on the pedal. Kalea Hatlewick (Fergus Falls, Minn.) scored an unassisted goal, her first as a Yellowjacket, at 46:15 to make it 5-0. Minutes later, Ana Morse (Duluth, Minn.) scored at 53:11 to stretch the lead to 6-0. Akason would add her final two goals, at 56:30 and 59:40 to make it 8-0. Less than a minute after Akason's fourth, Sarah Johnson (Cloquet, Minn.) scored to make it a 9-0 game. At 83:48, Hatlewick scored her second goal of the match to put the Yellowjackets in double digits. Morse scored her second goal of the match at 85:47 to make the final score 11-0.
Akason finished with four goals to pace the offense, while Hatlewick and Morse had two goals and an assist each. Johnson had a goal and three assists, McKay a goal and two assists and Katelyn Adams (Two Harbors, Minn.) had three assists.
Alexandra Paige (Anaheim, Calif.) was anything but busy in the match, making only two saves in picking up her fourth shutout of the season and third shutout in a row. Paige is currently riding a shutout streak of 290:49. The Yellowjackets held a 78-2 edge in shots attempted and 33-2 advantage in shots on goal.
The Yellowjackets (6-5, 0-2 WIAC) are on the road on Wednesday, October 5 when they will be in Mankato, Minn. to take on Bethany Lutheran College. The match will get underway at 7:00 p.m.
