Late Goal Gives Westfield State Win At Trinity
Hartford, Conn. – Junior Colleen Bazinet (Charlton, Mass.) scored the go-ahead goal on a header in the 86th minute to lead the visiting Westfield State University Owls over the Trinity College Bantams, 2-1, in women's soccer action this afternoon on Campus Field.Trinity slips to 4-3-2 overall with its second straight loss, while Westfield State, ranked No. 9 in New England, improves to 9-2-1 with their fifth win in six games.
The Bantams were first to strike, jumping to a 1-0 just 2:21 in the game, when senior co-captain forward Jenny Ley (Warwick, R.I.) scored on a pass from sophomore Martha Dane (Littleton, Mass.). The Owls answered in the 23rd minute with a goal from senior co-captain Katie Wye (Blackstone, Mass.), to knot the score at 1-1.
The game remained tied for the following 63 minutes until Bazinet headed a ball, on a well-placed corner kick by junior Leann Rivard (Chicopee, Mass.), into the Trinity goal. The shot deflected off the gloves of sophomore goalkeeper Midge Daniel (Wellesley, Mass.) into the cross bar, and back down into the net. The assist was Rivard's second of the game.
Minutes earlier, the Bantams had temporarily escaped danger when Westfield junior Brittanie McGregor (Ludlow, Mass.) lofted a ball to the far side of the net where Trinity senior defender Courtney DeVinney (Wallingford, Penn.) managed to deflect the shot on a strong defensive play. Westfield junior Kayley Miller (Ludlow, Mass.) then ripped a rebound shot off the post, setting up a third Owls shot in the late barrage. After Westfield took a 2-1 lead, senior forward Katie Giberson (Valhalla, N.Y.) made a strong attempt at tying the score, but her shot sailed just past the right post.
First-year goalkeeper Nicky Stasz (Easthampton, Mass.) is credited with the win for Owls, with three saves and no goals allowed in one half of action. At the midway point, Stasz relieved sophomore starter Jess Habif (Holliston, Mass.), who notched four saves in the contest. Daniel recorded nine stops for the Bantams in her first career start.
