A number of premium scoring opportunities created and controlled possession maintained by Cal Lutheran were themes of the first half.
Occidental goalkeeper Megan Leslie made three of her 10 saves in the opening six minutes of play and several other CLU shots narrowly missed the intended target. Regals goalkeeper Kristin Bailey turned away the lone OXY shot on target, taken by Alex Nicholson in the 11th minute of play.
Cal Lutheran broke through in the 23rd minute after team leading scorer Taylor Will ended a scoreless tie. She would play a role in all three scores including a late second half score.
Nearly fifteen minutes Jess Armstrong kept Will's corner cross in play and found Nicole Rains at point blank range to finish it off. Rains has scored in two of the past three games and has contributed an assist or goal in each.
Sinead Vaughan created several scoring opportunities with her midfield runs and was rewarded following a late insurance goal. She found Will in stride on the outside and the freshman put away her 15th goal of the year.
Bailey combined with Tina Hedwall for the team's sixth shutout in 11 games this season. The CLU defensive unit has allowed only 21 shots on goal in 11 games thus far in 2011.
CLU finished an undefeated first tour through SCIAC opposition and maintained a two-game advantage in the conference standings following its win over Occidental.
Cal Lutheran (10-1-0, 6-0-0 SCIAC) will host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (4-4-2, 4-2-0 SCIAC) on Saturday, Oct. 8, at Mt. Clef Stadium.
