Carroll Blanks Eureka, 10-0
EUREKA, Ill. – Carroll sophomore Jade Wickman finished service from teammate Sarah Tennant inside the 6-yard box in the eighth minute for the match-winning goal, sparking the visiting Pioneers in a 10-0 non-conference victory over the Eureka College women's soccer team, Wednesday afternoon at Traister Field.
The strike was Wickman's second goal of the season and gave the Pioneers (5-6-1) a 1-0 advantage at the 7:08 mark of the match. Tennant made it 2-0 in the 19th minute when she collected a Eureka turnover near the top of the box and lofted a shot over the head of Eureka junior goalkeeper Sami Williamson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central H.S.) for her team-leading seventh goal of the campaign. The Pioneers stretched their lead to 3-0 when Kara Delie redirected a corner kick from Leah Wiercinski into the back of the net at 36:27.
Delie scored twice in the first eight minutes of the second half to earn the hat trick and put the match away for the visitors. Natalie Jaeger added a pair of goals in the final 15:11 of the match, her first two goals of the season.
Williamson made 20 saves for the Red Devils (0-12-0), improving her season total to 147 stops. She needs 43 more saves in 2011 to match Amy Funk's single-season Eureka record of 191 saves set in 2007. Williamson's 20th and final save in the 72nd minute was the 300th of her collegiate career, extending her own all-time Eureka record.
Eureka freshman forward Jenna Brooks (Peoria, Ill./Limestone H.S.) took two shots for the Red Devils, including a 42nd minute attempt on goal that was stopped by Carroll reserve goalkeeper Kate Maxwell.
Wednesday's non-conference match was originally scheduled to be played last month but was rescheduled. Eureka returns to St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play this Saturday at Greenville at 1 p.m.
