Wheaton (Ill.) women defeat North Central 3-1
Wheaton, Ill. – The nationally-ranked Wheaton College women's soccer team defeated North Central 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Wheaton's Joe Bean Stadium. Wheaton improves its record to 14-0-1 on the year, with a 3-0-0 record in CCIW play with the win. North Central is now 5-7 overall and 0-4 in conference action.
Wheaton took a 2-1 lead a little more than five minutes into the second half when Keri Shannon headed the ball into the net off of a cross from Lelle at the 51:26 mark of the match. Wheaton was awarded a penalty kick with 76:57 played in the match when a hand ball was charged to the Cardinals in the box. Thunder senior Jaime Orewiler converted the penalty kick to extend Wheaton's lead to 3-1, which would become the final score.
Wheaton out-shot the Cardinals 24-4, with the Thunder holding a 6-0 edge in corner kicks. Wheaton goalkeeper Kelsey Graham made one save and allowed one goal, playing the first halve in net. Junior Hilary Barreto played the final 45 minutes of the match for the Thunder, with no shots on goal against her. North Central netminder Amy Frazzini made 10 saves and allowed three goals for the Cardinals.
The Thunder will travel to Augustana on Wednesday for a 5 PM match with the Vikings at Augustana's new on-campus field in Rock Island.
