HARTFORD, Conn. – The Norwich women's soccer team picked up a crucial 3-1 win over St. Joseph (Conn.) to keep their chances of a home postseason match alive on Thursday in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

Junior forward Brittany Casey scored two goals to bring her season tally up to 14 and also added an assist to pace the Cadets' offense. Sophomore forward Grace Fitzpatrick netted the other goal for Norwich.

Casey opened the scoring in the 26th minute by burying a chance to the right post off an assist from freshman midfielder Alex Frank to give the Cadets a 1-0 lead.

Less than six minutes later, Fitzpatrick tallied her fifth goal of the season by putting home a point blank shot off a cross from Casey.

St. Joseph (Conn.) cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 35th minute when Abby Montambault scored off an assist from Stacey Rutledge.

However, that's as close as the Blue Jays would get as Casey gave Norwich its two-goal lead back in the 41st minute with an unassisted corner kick goal that deflected off a St. Joseph (Conn.) player.

Neither side was able to score in the second half allowing the Cadets to walk away with the crucial three points to pull even with St. Joseph (Conn.) for fourth place in the GNAC standings.

Senior goalkeeper Meghan Kennedy returned for the first time since last week after getting kicked in the face and picked up the win for the Cadets while turning 10 shots. Holly Mirabela made six saves to take the loss for the Blue Jays.

Norwich (10-3-2, 7-3-2 GNAC) returns home on Saturday for its GNAC finale against Rivier. Match time is set for 12 p.m. and the Cadets will honor their five seniors on Senior Day. The Cadets will then close out the regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 26 by hosting Plattsburgh State at 3 p.m.
