Spalding Edges Eureka, 3-1
EUREKA, Ill. – Eureka College junior goalkeeper Sami Williamson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central H.S.) made 15 saves to become Eureka's new single-season record holder and senior Grace Zastrow (North Freedom, Wis./Reedsburg H.S.) scored for the second consecutive match, but visiting Spalding kept the Red Devils in check to earn a 3-1 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory, Saturday afternoon at Traister Field.
Williamson, who already owns Eureka's all-time saves record (345) and goalkeeper minutes played record (2,446), ended Saturday's contest with 192 saves for the year to set Eureka's new single-season mark. Amy Funk previously owned that record with 191 stops during the 2007 season.
Spalding took it to the Red Devils early, taking a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute on Kim Truster's second goal of the season. That goal proved to be the only offense of the first 45 minutes, and the Golden Eagles carried that 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Bailey Frantz scored the match-winner at 51:57 for a 2-0 lead. Zastrow answered just five seconds later on the ensuing restart, sending a deep shot from midfield past Spalding goalkeeper Monica Ross to cut Eureka's deficit in half, 2-1. The goal was Zastrow's second of the season and third of her career.
Playing with the one-goal advantage for a majority of the second half, Spalding provided an insurance goal in the 86th minute when Brittany Goode beat Williamson for a 3-1 advantage.
The Red Devils will play their final road contest of the 2011 season this Wednesday, traveling to Jacksonville, Ill. for a 1 p.m. kickoff against MacMurray.
