Lauzau Scores Winner as No. 19 Spartans Blank Hiram, 1-0
HIRAM, Ohio -- Competing in its final non-conference match of the 2011 campaign, the No. 19 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team picked up a goal in the 72nd minute from junior midfielder Alyssa Lauzau (Pickerington, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) and held host Hiram College without a shot in a 1-0 victory Friday night at Henry Field.
The Spartans, 11-2-2 overall and 3-1 in the University Athletic Association, return to action with a pair of key conference road matches next weekend, starting at the University of Chicago (Ill.) on Friday, October 28, at 5:30 p.m. (CDT).
Hiram falls to 3-11-2 for the season.
Despite holding a lopsided, 14-0 advantage in shots during the first half, the Spartans were unable to break through and the match went into intermission with no score.
After three more shots in the second half, Case finally broke through as Lauzau scored her second goal of the season via an assist from freshman defender Jessica Sabers (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) at the 71:04 mark.
For the match, the Spartans held decided advantages in shots (24-0) and corner kicks (11-0).
In net, senior goalkeeper Anna Kennedy (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) picked up one of the easier victories of her career, not needing a save in recording her school-record ninth shutout of 2011.
With three regular-season matches remaining on the schedule, the Spartans are one win and one shutout shy of tying the 1991 squad (12-6 overall) for the most in school history.
Following next Friday's match at Chicago, the Spartans travel down to St. Louis, Missouri, to take on Washington University at 1:30 p.m. (CDT) on Sunday, Oct. 30.
