Dallas, Pa. – Misericordia University used a strong defensive performance and a pair of first-half goals to hand The University of Scranton women's soccer team a 2-0 defeat at Mangelsdorf Field on Wednesday evening.

The Cougars received goals from junior midfielder Laura Roney (Kintnersville, Pa./Palisades) and junior forward Sam Helmstetter (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

Misericordia held Scranton to 10 shots, eight of which were on goal, but freshman goalie Jess Anderson (West Deptford, N.J./Deptford) made six saves in the first half and junior Caitlin Sweeney (Turnersville, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) came on to make two after the break.

Junior defender Jessica Sciscione (Freehold, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) led the Royals with two shots as they were shut out for the first time since a 1-0 loss to Western Connecticut State on October 12 at Fitzpatrick Field.

The defeat was the first road loss for the Royals, who had gone 4-0-1 on the road. It was just the third time this season Scranton allowed two goals and snapped a streak of 10 straight games of one or no goals allowed, dating back to a 2-2 tie with Kean University on Wednesday, September 14, at Fitzpatrick Field.

The Royals hadn't allowed a goal in their previous 300 minutes before Roney gave Misericordia a 1-0 lead at the 13:27 mark on Wednesday night.

The victory was Misericordia's first over Scranton since 2007. Scranton leads the all-time series between the schools, 11-4.

Scranton returns to action Saturday when they travel to Huntingdon, Pa. to face Juniata College at 3:30 p.m. They will host a Landmark Conference semifinal playoff game at Fitzpatrick Field on Wednesday, November 2, with the time and opponent yet to be determined.
