St. Joe’s slips past Cadets
NORTHFIELD, VT. – In an evenly-matched Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's soccer quarterfinal Oct. 29, St. Joseph's College of Connecticut edged Norwich University in a penalty-kick shootout.
The two sides played 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods to a 0-0 draw. Senior goalkeeper Meghan Kennedy (Lowell, Mass.), recording her second shutout in the last three matches, held off the Bluejay offense with five saves in 110 minutes. Norwich's offense kept silent as well by St. Joseph's goalkeeper Holly Mirabella who ended with six saves in the same span.
The penalty kick shootout was just as nip-and-tuck as the rest of the match. After eight combined attempts, the two sides stood 2-2 with one attempt each remaining. Kennedy nearly corralled a shot to her right off the foot of St. Joseph's Katie Watts but the ball bounded into the net for a 3-2 SJC advantage. Norwich's final try was blocked successfully by Mirabella.
The Maroon and Gold (11-4-3) was led on offense by junior forward Brittany Casey (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) with five shot attempts. Junior midfielder Lisa Esparza (Dover, N.H.) was second with two.
