WPI Blanked by Regionally Ranked Western Connecticut
Worcester, MA --- Amber Pelletier (Coventry, CT) tallied a pair of goals and added an assist to pace regionally-ranked Western Connecticut to a 4-0 shutout over WPI in a non-conference women's soccer matchup played on Thursday evening.
The Colonials, ranked tenth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) New England poll, improve to 6-2 overall while WPI drops 1-7-1 on the season.
Pelletier gave the guests the lead with the only goal of the first half when she took a pass from Jillian Duran (Uncasville, CT), spun and fired from just past the penalty spot at 7:55.
Western Connecticut erupted for three goals in a less than four minute span early in the second stanza that put the contest out of reach. Pelletier began the spurt at 50:59 when she knocked home a put back following a Ariana D'Aurio (Cheshire, CT) shot. Katie Wolfe (Suffern, NY) pushed the advantage to 3-0 at 53:07 when she found the upper right corner after she collected a loose ball at the 18. Emily Burke (Windsor Locks, CT) closed out the run 1:47 later chipping in a shot over the goalie's head following a pass by Pelletier.
Jamie Trayer (Oakville, CT) recorded a pair of saves to pick up her first win in net this season for the Colonials. WPI goalkeeper Maddie Willer (Penfield, NY) turned away six shots for the Engineers.
For the game, Western Connecticut enjoyed a 19-4 edge in shots and took all four of the game's corner kicks. Courtney Langley (Fairfield, ME), Megan Forti (Lynn, MA), Tori Howland (Red Hook, NY) and Lauren Frank (Somerset, MA) all were credited with shots for the Engineers.
