Washington University Women’s Soccer Falls to No. 6 Wheaton 4-2 in NCAA Sectional Final
Wheaton, Ill., November 19, 2011 — No. 6 ranked Wheaton College scored three goals in a span of two minutes and 16 seconds late in the second half as the Thunder posted a 4-2 come-from-behind victory over the No. 12 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team in the NCAA Division III Sectional Championship on Saturday night in Wheaton, Ill.
Washington University held onto a 2-0 lead with less than 18 minutes remaining in the contest, before Wheaton's Kaitlyn Le Baudor headed home a pair of goals in a span of 63 seconds. Le Baudor found the net on a cross from Val Lelle at 72:34, and then made it 2-2 after heading home a cross from Jamie Orewiler at 73:37.
Keri Shannon scored the game-winner for the Thunder at the 74:50 mark, as her unassisted goal proved to be the game-winner. Orewiler rounded out the scoring for Wheaton with a goal at 85:46 to seal the victory.
Wheaton (22-1-2) outshot Washington University, 20-10, and had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Washington U. was called for 20 fouls in the loss, while Wheaton was whistled for just four violations.
Sophomore Jessica Johnson scored just 24 seconds into the contest, as she chipped Wheaton goalkeeper Kelsey Graham to give Washington U. the 1-0 advantage. The goal for Johnson was her fifth of the season and ninth of her career.
It stayed a one-goal game until the 59th minute, when freshman Lillie Toaspern chipped a shot over Graham's head to just inside the left post to make it 2-0. The goal for Toaspern was her conference-leading 12th of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Clara Jaques made three saves in the loss for Washington University, who ends its season with a school record 18-5 overall record.
Bear Notebook: Washington University is 19-10-5 all-time in the NCAA Tournament … Wheaton advances to the NCAA semifinals for the sixth time in school history.
