Edgewood College's Gerry nets another goal: Academic All-American

MADISON, Wis. - Elaine Gerry's eye-popping statistics often put her in exclusive company. This time, however, she is joining an elite group in recognition of her academic excellence. Gerry, a standout on the Edgewood College women's soccer team, has been named to the 2011 Capital One Division III Academic All-American First Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Gerry becomes the first Edgewood College women's soccer player, and just the fourth Eagle student-athlete in history to earn first team Academic All-American honors. Previously, only Tyler Duellman (men's soccer, 2009), Megan Scheele (women's basketball, 2008-09) and Andrew Handorf (baseball, 2006) had ever reached first team status. She is the seventh different Eagle ever to be named to one of the Academic All-American teams.
Gerry, an accounting major with a 3.94 grade point average, scored 24 goals and totaled 52 points this season, which ranked in the top 15 in the nation in both categories. The three-time first team all-Northern Athletics Conference player, finished her junior year with 75 career goals which ranks second all-time in school history. Early next season, she will likely become the NAC all-time leading goal scorer as she needs just two goals to pass MSOE's Jessica Axt for the record.
The graduate of Sauk Prairie High School was one of just two juniors to be named to the 2011 Capital One Division III Academic All-American first team, joining forward Paige Piper of Wooster College. Senior forward Courtney Chadburn of Castelton State was awarded the Academic All-American of the Year honor. Madison native and UW-La Crosse defender Kristin Brown was also named to the first team.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
