Cobbers Cap Two-Win Weekend
MOORHEAD, MINN. (9/10/11)—Cobber freshman Laura Prosinski scored two goals in a span of 2:27 in the second half against St. Scholastica and helped No.17-ranked Concordia cap a two-win weekend. CC outlasted St. Scholastica 3-2 on Saturday a day after blanking UW-La Crosse 1-0.
With the two wins the Cobbers move to 3-0-1 on the year. It marks the third time in the past four seasons that Concordia has been unbeaten in the first four games of the year.
Concordia appeared to have the game well in control against the Saints in the first half. The Cobbers wound up outshooting St. Scholastica 14-1 in the first period but the score was tied at 1-1. CC got on the board first when Sarah Rounds netted her team-leading fourth goal of the season at 14:43. Concordia looked like they might run away with the contest but then the Saints scored on their only shot of the half when Kaylee Gombold outraced the CC defense on the left wing and fired a shot into the upper left corner of the net.
The game stayed deadlocked at 1-1 until Prosinski came up with her two-goal outburst. She scored her first goal at 52:45 on an assist from Libby Fransdal. Fransdal served the ball into the penalty area on a dead ball and Prosinski was there to knock the ball into the net. She would give the Cobbers a 3-1 lead at
55:12 after she finished off a passing combination from Nikole Koehn and Chelsea Klemetson.
St. Scholastica got to within one at 67:57 when Kallie Thomas scored directly off of a corner kick.
CC's defense denied the CSS offense any more scoring chances in the final 22 minutes of play. For the game, Concordia outshot the Saints 26-7 in overall shots and 13-3 in shots on goal. Prosinski and senior midfielder Kelsey Swagger led the Cobber offense with six shots each.
On Friday the Cobbers used a control passing attack to beat UW-La Crosse 1-0. Concordia struggled to find the net in the opening half as their touch inside the final offensive third was off.
CC finally broke through at 70:31 when Rounds was in the right place at the right time and knocked home the game winner. Freshmen Rochelle Hickerson and Fransdal were credited with the assists .
Concordia outshot UW-La Crosse 15-7 and held an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Cobbers will begin their quest for their fourth conference title when they play at Hamline on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m.
