Unbeaten Streak Falls At St. Thomas
ST. PAUL, Minn. (9/27/11)-- No.22-ranked Concordia conceded a goal in the final five minutes of play against St. Thomas and lost for the first time in 2011. The Tommies' game-winning goal at 85:33 broke open a game that had been deadlocked since the 29th minute of play.
Concordia is now 4-1-3 overall and 1-1-2 in the MIAC. St. Thomas improves to 5-2-0 in all games and 3-1-0 in league games.
Concordia spent much of the game attacking from the wing and trying to get in from the corners of the field. The Cobbers had several chances to get the go-ahead goal in the second half but they either misfired on the shot or the final pass was just a bit off. CC also had several chances from dead balls around the St. Thomas penalty area but could never find the back of the net.
St. Thomas struck first with a goal in the 16th minute of play. The goal, which came on a corner kick, was against the run of play. Concordia opened the game by dominating the play and holding the majority of possession time for the first 15 minutes. The Tommies goal at 15:49 came after UST had been awarded a corner. The ensuing service was headed home from the top of the penalty area.
The Cobbers were able to tie the game at the 28:44 mark. CC pushed forward and had three shots in the span of two minutes before Sarah Rounds scored her seventh goal of the season. The score came shortly after a corner. Laura Prosinski and Liz Robinson were credited with the assists.
The game would stay tied at 1-1 until the fateful final five minutes of regulation.
Concordia held a 14-9 advantage in total shots while both teams had five shots on goal. Cobber keeper Ali Nelson made three saves and Tommie goalie Allie Byron stopped four shots to earn the win.
