Oswego State Women's Soccer Starts Season With 3-2 Win
MADISON, N.J. – Shelly Bateman (Sr., Fulton, N.Y.) netted a pair of
goals to propel the Oswego State women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory
over St. Joseph's (L.I.) on Saturday. The Lakers have a quick
turnaround before they face Fairleigh Dickinson – Florham tomorrow at
11 a.m.
Bateman opened the scoring in the 21st minute when she used some fancy
dribbling to beat St. Joseph goalkeeper Kayla Flowers from 15 yards
out. It appeared as if Oswego State would take the one-goal lead into
halftime, but Samantha Garcia capitalized on a scramble in front of
the net that led to St. Joseph tying the game 11 seconds before
intermission.
The goal did not dissuade the Lakers at the start of the second half,
though, as Bateman received a nice pass from Raquel Vescio (Jr.,
Fulton, N.Y.) less than three minutes into the frame. Oswego State
doubled its advantage in the 56th minute when Bri Dolan (So.,
Fayetteville, N.Y.) put away a free kick from Georgia Traynor (So.,
Tomkins Cove, N.Y.).
St. Joseph's did not go away, as Tara Bernocco found the back of the
net on a blast from 30 yards out in the 73rd minute. However, that
would be as close as it would get, as Oswego State hung on for the
win.
Laker goalkeeper Steph Hotaling (So., Fulton, N.Y.) earned the win
after stopping three shots, while Flowers finished with five saves.
