Medaille Women Fall in Season Opener
BUFFALO, NY - The Medaille College women's soccer team was unable to earn a win for new head coach Matt Stedman as they dropped their opener (3-1) to Hiram College.
On a steamy day at All High Stadium the Lady Mavs had some trouble possessing the ball in the opening half and they dodged a bullet midway through that half when Hiram shot wide on a penalty kick opportunity which kept the game scoreless. It would head to halftime knotted at (0-0).
The second half would see the Lady Mavs play much better, however, their opponent did the same, scoring just (1:20) into the second half and then again less than two minutes later to grab a (2-0) advantage.
The Lady Mavs stepped up their play at that point and drew within a goal when rookie Candis Kapuscinski put home a ball off the foot of teammate Joey Ruderman in the 57th minute for her first collegiate goal. They continued to pressure the Terriers until Hiram broke through for a third goal in the 69th minute.
Despite a couple of chances down the stretch the Lady Mavs were unable to get any closer. Junior keeper Denay O'Connor stopped four shots on the day including a beautiful diving stop late in the game to keep Medaille in it.
The loss starts them off at (0-1-0) and they will look to get in the win column when they host Keuka College tomorrow (9/2) at 2:00pm at All High Stadium.
