St. Joseph's College-Patchogue edges Rutgers-Camden, 1-0
MADISON, N.J. (Sept. 2, 2012) – Junior midfielder Samantha Garcia (Central Islip, NY/St. John the Baptist) scored the game's lone goal at 3:31 to power the St. Joseph's College-Patchogue women's soccer team over Rutgers University-Camden, 1-0, on the last day of the FDU Classic at Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham.
Both teams went 1-1 in the season-opening tournament.
Garcia scored off a cross from freshman forward Jamianne Eden (Ronkonkoma, NY/Connetquot) to provide the only goal the Golden Eagles needed.
St. Joseph's-Patchogue weathered several Rutgers-Camden threats in the second half, but junior goalie Kayla Flowers (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) made eight saves to earn the shutout for the Golden Eagles. Flowers had six saves in the second half when the Scarlet Raptors held an 8-4 advantage in shots.
For the game, St. Joseph's-Patchogue had a 17-12 edge in shots, but Rutgers-Camden put eight shots on goal, while the Golden Eagles had four on goal.
Rutgers-Camden junior captain Sarah Kooistra (Mantua, NJ/Clearview Regional) led the team with four shots, including two that were saved by Flowers. Midfielders Tori Gerstenacker (Howell, NJ/Howell) and Rebecca Gougher (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) also had two shots on goal apiece.
Scarlet Raptor junior goalie Lauren West (Mantua, NJ/Clearview Regional) made four saves, all coming in the opening half.
Both teams had five corner kicks, with the Raptors holding a 3-1 edge in the second half.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Wednesday with a 7 p.m. game at Wesley College.
