Dixon leads Rutgers-Camden to opening-day win
MADISON, N.J. (Sept. 1, 2012) – Junior midfielder Dawn Dixon (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional) spent the last two seasons starring at Burlington County College.
She spent her opening day at Rutgers University-Camden helping the Scarlet Raptors outlast host Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham at the FDU Classic.
Dixon notched the game-winning goal 25 seconds into the second overtime period, and assisted on the Raptors' first goal as Rutgers-Camden defeated FDU-Florham, 2-1, here Saturday.
Dixon beat a defender one-on-one to produce her winning goal in a game that saw the Red Devils hold a 24-10 advantage in shots and an 11-1 margin in corner kicks.
Rutgers-Camden scored the lone first-half goal at 9:49 when Dixon's cross on a breakaway was converted into the season's first goal by freshman midfielder Stephanie Rodriguez (Kearny, NJ/Kearney).
The Devils tied the game 17:18 into the second half when junior forward Jennifer DiGioia (Roxbury, NJ/Roxbury) knocked in a cross from 30 yards out off a feed from senior midfielder Nicole Kauffman (Sewaren, NJ/Woodbridge).
Dixon's game-winning goal came on the first shot of the second overtime period.
Rutgers-Camden junior goalie Lauren West (Mantua, NJ/Clearview Regional), making her first Raptor appearance since transferring from Salisbury University, collected 10 saves in the victory.
Freshman keeper Anna Bandly (Union, NJ/Union) made two saves for FDU-Florham.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Sunday at the FDU-Classic. The Raptors face Saint Joseph's-Patchogue in a 1 p.m. game.
