ST. JOSEPH'S (LI) DOWNS NJCU, 3-0, IN SCARLET RAIDER CLASSIC OPENER
NEWARK, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | After ranking in the top 30 in Division III in scoring offense in each of the last four seasons, goals haven't been as easy to come by in the early stages of the 2012 campaign for the New Jersey City University women's soccer team. On Friday night at the Scarlet Raiders Soccer Classic at Rutgers-Newark's Alumni Field, neither team collected many shots, but St. Joseph's College (LI) was able to put away three attempts as the Eagles blanked NJCU, 3-0.
St. Joe's (2-1-1) outshot NJCU (1-2-1) by a slim 13-10 margin; the Knights had a 6-4 edge in the first 45 minutes while the Eagles outshot NJCU 9-4 in the second period. The start of the game was delayed 20 minutes due to lightning. St. Joseph's leads the all-time series, 8-1.
Despite just four first-half shots by St. Joe's, junior midfielder Elizabeth Pulaski (North Babylon, NY) was able to put away half of those chances, scoring in the fourth and 15th minutes before junior midfielder Samantha Garcia (Central Islip, NY) added an 82nd minute insurance goal for the opposition.
NJCU sophomore goalkeeper BRITTANY HOFFMAN (McMurray, PA/Peters Township) made six saves, including five in the second half.
