Vega Breaks Program Shutout Record as New Paltz Women's Soccer Shuts Out DeSales, 3-0
BOSTON, Mass. – With her fourth shutout of the season, senior goalkeeper Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, N.Y./Baldwin Senior) broke the program record for career shutouts, as the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (4-1-0) defeated DeSales University (2-2-1), 3-0, in the final day of the Simmons Tournament on Sunday.
Vega's shutout puts her alone at the top of the New Paltz women's soccer program record list with 29 career shutouts. She recorded seven saves without allowing a goal to earn her fourth win and shutout of the season. Once again, she was given plenty of help by a strong Hawk offensive that fired 20 shots on target in Sunday's contest, forcing DeSales goalkeeper Michelle Churchman to make 17 stops.
Vega was not the only Hawk climbing the record lists on Sunday. In the 81st minute, senior forward Shelby Kondelka (Bloomingburg, N.Y./Pine Bush) scored her third goal of the season and her seventh point. She is now tied for the program record in goals (21) and points (50).
Senior forward Samantha Abravanel (Islip, N.Y./Islip) kicked off the scoring in the 41st minute with her third goal of the season. Freshman forward Chelsea Weir (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) matched Abravanel with her third score of the year, coming at the 56:15 mark. Weir and freshman midfielder Kristina Gandolfo(Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) each picked up an assist in Sunday's win, putting each of them at two for the year.
New Paltz held a significant advantage, taking 28 shots compared to eight for DeSales. The Hawks also held an 8-0 edge in corner kicks in Sunday's matchup.
The Hawks return home to host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday, Sept. 12. The game is slated to begin at 4 p.m. at Alumni Field.
