Sep. 9:  Senior captain Stephanie Sayward scored two goals to lead the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Medaille in day two of the Cortland State Tournament in Cortland, NY.

Junior Julia Friesen and sophomore Meghan Ryan scored the other goals for St. Lawrence, which improved to 3-0-1 with the win.  Medaille dropped to 1-4 on the season.

"Although we started off a little slow after recovering from the Cortland game, the team managed to generate quality opportunities through the match," said head coach Franco Bari.  "Our ball movement was much better in the second half and it was nice to see so many of our players not only contribute, but also play at a high level."

Sayward opened up the scoring in the 14th minute when she hit a hard shot off a free kick from 31 yards out that went in the top left corner of the goal.  About a minute and a half later, Friesen netted her fourth goal of the season off a through pass on the right side from sophomore Mackenzie Collins.

In the second half, Sayward scored her second goal of the game and third of the season off a nice cross from Friesen in the 56th minute.  In the 82nd minute, Ryan capped the Saints' scoring on a give-and-go with first-year student Caroline Crandall to bring the score to 4-0.

Junior Andrea Strauss earned her first shutout of the season with one save, while Denay O'Connor made five saves for Medaille.  The Saints controlled the majority of the game, owning a 21-3 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.

St. Lawrence will travel to Potsdam State on Wednesday for a non-conference match up with the Bears at 5:00 pm.
