Eight is Enough
BOSTON – Annie Koensgen (Placitas, N.M.) and Andi Flannery (E. Machias, Maine) each factored in on five goals as Maine Maritime thumped Wheelock 8-3 in women's soccer. Sunday evening's eight goals marked the Mariners' (2-3) most offensive day since 2006, and outpaced the total output of goals in the 2011 season.
Koensgen scored three goals and added two assists, while Flannery scored four goals and assisted on one more. Flannery's assist came on the first goal of the contest when she sent a cross into the middle of the box for Koensgen to finish. Koensgen went from helped to helper 5:02 later, setting up Sarah Brochu (Hardwick, Vt.) for a tally. Brocuh added two assists on Flannery goals, including the game winner. She made run at the cage to draw the keeper out, then sent it to the far post for Flannery's finish.
Flannery's four goals ties the Maine Maritime record for markers in a game, a feat first accomplished by Amy Asselin in 2003, also against Wheelock. Two additional players scored four in a game prior to Flannery on Sunday.
Maine Maritime outshot Wheelock 35-11 in securing the its second-straight win. The Mariners return to action next Sunday, opening North Atlantic Conference play against Maine-Farmington.
