Wheaton Sweeps NEWMAC Awards for Second Consecutive Week
NORTON, Mass.- The Wheaton College women's soccer team swept the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) awards for the second consecutive week on Monday, with junior Rachelle Rodman (Fair Oaks, Calif./Bella Vista) and sophomore Lauren Corigliano (Roselle Park, N.J./Roselle Park) earning the league's defensive and offensive player of the week awards, respectively.
During Wheaton's 2-0 week while playing all 180 minutes, Rodman helped anchor a defense that surrendered just one goal each to 2011 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament team Salve Regina University and nationally-ranked Williams College.
During the Blue and White's 4-1 win over Salve on Saturday, Rodman marked a 2011 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-New England player. Against Williams the next day, a 2-1 victory for Wheaton, she kept the 14th-ranked Ephs off the scoreboard for over 87 minutes with some stellar individual defense.
Corigliano tallied her first points of the season over the weekend, recording a game-winning goal against Salve and scoring once at Williams. On Saturday, she snapped Wheaton's 1-1 tie with the Seahawks courtesy of her goal in the 55th minute before putting the Lyons on the board with a marker midway through Sunday's opening half at Williams.
Receiving national votes and ranked sixth in New England, Wheaton remained unbeaten at 3-0-1 and will host Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Saturday's conference opener at 1:00 p.m.
