No. 9 Washington U. Picks Up 5-0 Road Win at Fontbonne
Clayton, Mo., September 12, 2012 — The No. 9 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 5-0 victory over Fontbonne University on Wednesday night at Centene Stadium in Clayton, Mo.
Washington U., which improved its record to a perfect 4-0 with the win, continues its five-game road trip at No. 3 ranked Wheaton College (Ill.) on Saturday, Sept. 15, in Wheaton, Ill. Game time is set for 1 p.m. The Thunder is coming off a pair of wins on the West Coast against Whitworth University (4-0) and the University of Puget Sound (2-1).
Washington U. outshot Fontbonne 10-0 in the opening 45 minutes of play, and fired eight shots on goal. Controlling play for almost the entire first half, the Bears found the net for the first time in the 22nd minute. Sophomore Anna Zambricki played a ball with her left foot into the box to freshman Sam Ezratty, who headed it into the far corner for her first collegiate goal.
In the 34th minute, sophomore Lillie Toaspern chipped Fontbonne goalkeeper Kaniz Abbas to make it 2-0. Freshman Olivia Lillegravenmade a nice play to get the ball to Toaspern in the box and was credited with the assist. Freshman Liz Collins concluded the scoring for Washington U. with a goal late in the first half to push the lead to 3-0. The goal for Collins was the first of her career.
Washington U. came out with much more intensity in the second half, and found the net just a little more than five minutes into play. JuniorDarcy Banco played a ball into the corner to Toaspern, who sent a cross into the box on the foot of senior Emily Gosché. She settled the ball and quickly fired a shot to the far corner for her second goal of the season.
Head coach Jim Conlon pulled most of the starters midway through the second half, and the fresh legs off the Washington U. bench outmanned the Griffins, who played just four subs in the game. Freshman Anna Sippel scored her second goal of the year on an assist from fellow freshman Nicole Kawamato at 68:21 to round out the scoring for the Bears.
Junior Kate Doyle and senior Nicole Martin split time directing the Bears' defense from the center back position, allowing just three shots in the 90 minutes of action. Washington U. outshot Fontbonne 28-3, and had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Bears were called for 11 fouls while Fontbonne did not commit a foul in the 90 minutes played. Washington U.'s defense has not allowed a goal in 293:52 minutes played, a span of more than three games. The Bears allowed just one goal this season, good for a 0.24 goals against average.
