No. 9 Washington U. Suffers First Loss of Season at No. 3 Wheaton, 4-0
Wheaton, Ill., September 15, 2012 — No. 3 ranked Wheaton College broke open a one-goal game at halftime with three second-half goals en route to a 4-0 victory over No. 9 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon in Wheaton, Ill.
The loss for Washington U. was its first of the season and dropped its overall record to 4-1. Wheaton improves to 6-0 and extends its non-losing streak at home to 41 games dating back to the 2009 season.
Wheaton's Ally Witt gave the Thunder a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute when she collected a rebound to net her third goal of the year. Wheaton held a 12-1 advantage in shots in the first half, including a 7-1 edge in shots on goal.
Anna Seabolt made it 2-0 with a goal just inside the 18-yard box just three minutes into the second half. Leah DeMoss added a pair of second-half goals to round out the scoring for the Thunder.
Washington U. senior goalkeeper Clara Jaques made seven saves and allowed three goals in 66 minutes played. Wheaton outshot Washington U. 20-9 and held a 9-0 edge in corner kicks.
Washington University returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 16, at DePauw University. Game time is set for 3 p.m. (ET) in Greencastle, Ind. The Tigers have a 0-5 overall record and are coming off a 1-0 loss to Denison University on Saturday.
Bear Notebook: It was a rematch of last season's NCAA sectional final – a 4-2 victory by Wheaton … Washington U. is 4-11-1 all-time against Wheaton, and the Thunder have won the last four meetings.
