Camp-Out!
Hackettstown, N.J. (September 15, 2012) – The Cyclones used two goals each from Becky Camp and Samantha Sysak as Centenary opened its Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) schedule with a 7-0 shutout of Keystone College.
The Giants and Cyclones opened the game playing scoreless for over 28 minutes before Sysak netted the first of her two goals at 28:14. Sysak scored again, just eight minutes later as she found the back of the goal from the right side of the goal box to give Centenary a 2-0 lead.
The Cyclones appeared as if they would enter the half with the 2-0 lead when Cara Holmes found Sara Smith on the right side of the 18 yard box in the final minute of the half. Smith drove in a little closer before driving the ball past the Keystone keeper from 12 yards out with just: 25 seconds remaining in the half.
Centenary continued to pressure the Giants in the second half, taking 47 shots on the afternoon, with 23 shots on goal. The Cyclones took 26 of those 47 shots in the second half, with four finding the back of the net.
Camp scored the first goal of the second half, 20 minutes in when she took a crossing pass from Smith, finding herself one-on-one with the goalie. Camp fired off a shot, scoring her first goal of the season.
The Cyclones would score under five minutes later as Alyssa Hackelberg, not in her usual position of goal, received the ball alone in front of the goal in the 70th minute. Hackelberg beat the keeper, netting her first goal of her Centenary career.
Relentless pressure was the story of the day for the Cyclones who did not rest on the 5-0 lead. Just two minutes after Hackelberg's goal, Camp scored, again taking a pass from Smith, this time bouncing the ball off the right post and into goal.
Centenary added a final goal when Laura Potter struck a ball into the upper right corner for her team leading fourth goal sealing a 7-0 conference opening shutout. In the win, Centenary outshot Keystone 47-1, only forcing keeper Megan Williams to make one save. Camp led the Cyclones with 13 shots, seven of which reaching goal, scoring on two.
With the win, Centenary improves to 2-3 on the season and 1-0 in CSAC play. The Cyclones will next play St. Joseph's College at home on Monday, September 17th at 4:00 pm.
