Kronick Hot Streak Continues in Hopkins 5-0 Victory
BALTIMORE, MD – Hannah Kronick posted her third hat trick in seven matches to guide the #6 Johns Hopkins women's soccer team past St. Mary's (MD), 5-0, Wednesday night at Homewood Field.
The sophomore forward continued her recent scoring tear, scoring seven goals in the past two games. Kronick's feat versus the Seahawks tied a Hopkins all-time and single-season record for hat tricks with three.
Hopkins (6-1-1) dominated possession from the opening whistle, and put heavy pressure on the St. Mary's (2-3-1) defense. The demands on the Seahawk defense led to an own goal in the 19th minute by defender Morgan Dorset. The Blue Jays played a dangerous ball into the box and Dorset mistakenly cleared the ball into her own net to give Hopkins a 1-0 lead.
Kronick notched her first strike of the game in the 32nd minute after collecting a nifty through ball from teammate Maria Touloumes. Kronick beat goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz one-on-one and scored on an open net from a tough angle.
Just 10 minutes later, Kelly Baker added her second goal of the season after a tough individual play by Christina Convey on the right wing. Convey beat her mark on the goal line and found Baker at the top of the six-yard box to put the Blue Jays ahead, 3-0.
The Blue Jays added their fourth strike in the 49th minute when Kronick once again got behind the Seahawk defense for a one-on-one with Wirtz. This time the powerful forward was the beneficiary of a through ball from freshman Issy Berkey.
Kronick capped off her hat trick in the 73rd minute after bringing down a looping long ball from center back Emily Nagourney. The sophomore chipped Wirtz from just outside the 18-yard box to give Hopkins a 5-0 lead.
Hopkins outshot St. Mary's by a large margin, 23-3, as goalkeeper Meredith Maguire only needed one save to earn her eighth career shutout. Wirtz made five saves in the effort.
Kronick has now scored 11 goals through eight games and continues to climb the Johns Hopkins record books. She currently ranks tied for fifth all-time in program history in goals (30) and tied for seventh in points (71) through just 29 games.
The Blue Jays return to conference action on Saturday at Muhlenberg at 3:00 pm in Allentown, PA.
