Seniors Star as Beavers Overcome Early Deficit

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Seniors Frances Tapia recorded two goals and one assist and Dzindzi Asamoah-Wade added one goal and two assists as the City College of New York women's soccer team (5-1) overcame an early 1-0 deficit to defeat The King's College (2-4), 4-1, on Friday afternoon at Randall's Island Field 50.

An early goal by Denissa Palmer gave King's College a 1-0 lead (6:35 into the game) and the Beavers trailed 1-0 going into halftime.

However, CCNY came out of the break strong as Wade scored her eighth goal of the season on a penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1. The Beavers then hit a ten-minute stretch that saw Tapia score two goals and freshman Cebrina Porter record her first collegiate goal as CCNY took a three-goal lead.

"Francis moved out of midfielder today and really did well," said head coach Don Manfria. "She has a good understanding of the spacing we need. Overall, everyone is playing well. After a sluggish start to the game, all four goals in the second half were executed the way we wanted to execute them."

Manfria raved about the play and effort from freshmen Elif Demircan and Grace Benavides.

"Elif keeps getting better and she does a lot of the grunt work. She moves the ball really well. Grace is starting to become an important link in our offense and helps us find the open space."

Nicole Carroll recorded two saves as the sophomore goalie improved to 5-1 on the season.

The Beavers return to CUNYAC action on Monday, Sept. 24 at 4 PM at Randall's Island Field 91.
