Medaille Women Victorious in AMCC Opener
BUFFALO, NY - The Medaille College women's soccer team opened up AMCC play with a hard fought (3-1) victory over Penn State-Altoona on a nice fall evening at All High Stadium.
The Lady Mavs opened the scoring in the 21st minute when rookie Candis Kapuscinski buried a chance for her fifth goal of the season to give Medaille a (1-0) advantage. The visiting Lions would carry the run of play after that goal for a good portion of the first half but to no avail as the Lady Mavs headed to halftime with the one goal edge.
Early in the second half Medaille would double their lead when senior Katie Botsford tallied her second goal of the season on a hard struck free kick in the 51st minute. However, the Lions would cut the lead in half just minutes later on a nice assisted tally to give themselves new life.
In the 69th minute a foul in the box by Penn State would give Medaille a penalty kick and an opportunity to regain their two goal cushion. Sophomore Alyssa Unterborn would make the most of that opportunity as she capitalized on the P.K. to give Medaille a (3-1) lead.
The Lady Mavs outshot the Lions (15-13) overall but the biggest difference in the game was that Medaille put nine of those shots on goal while Altoona could manage to put just two on frame. Earning the victory between the pipes for Medaille was junior goalkeeper Denay O'Connor.
The Lady Mavs improve to (3-8-0) overall and start off (1-0-0) in conference play. They will head to Hamburg, NY to face Hilbert College on Tuesday (9/25) at 2:00pm in another AMCC matchup with their crosstown rivals.
