Tapia Records Back-to-Back Two Goal Performances in 4-0 Shutout Win
NEW YORK – Senior Frances Tapia posted her second consecutive two-goal performance to lead the City College of New York women's soccer team (6-1) to a 4-0 shutout over Lehman College (3-4) on Monday afternoon at Randall's Island Field 91.
Tapia's two goals came in the second half and gave the forward five goals on the year while freshman Taylor Jo Gillen and Grace Benavides added their own goals as CCNY continues its strong offensive start to the 2012 season.
Defense was key in the first half as the Beavers fired eight shots on goal in the opening period. After 30 minutes of play, Jo Gillen found the back of the net off of a rebound by Jessica Salas' shot for her third goal of the season and a 1-0 lead for CCNY.
Twenty minutes into the second half, Benavides recorded her first collegiate goal as the Beavers took a 2-0 lead before Tapia's two goals. Paola Ramos and Benavides picked up assists in the fourth shutout victory for CCNY and goalkeeper Nicole Carroll.
City College face CUNYAC foe John Jay College of Criminal Justice on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 6 PM looking to begin conference play 2-0 for the first time under head coach Don Manfria.
