Seahawk Women's Soccer Edges Catholic

Washington, D.C. – Junior midfielder Yvonne Latour (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) lifted the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team to a 1-0 non-conference win over The Catholic University of America Tuesday afternoon.

Latour netted the lone goal of the match in the 61st minute when she split a pair of Catholic defenders and put the shot past first-year goalkeeper Lexi Halperin (River Vale, N.J.).

St. Mary's (4-3-1) dominated the first half with an 11-4 shot advantage and a 2-1 corner kick margin but Halperin came up with eight saves while junior goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) made two to keep the game scoreless at halftime.

The tables turned in the second stanza as Catholic (2-7) peppered Wirtz and the Seahawk defense with 15 shots to St. Mary's four attempts.  Wirtz denied eight Cardinal shots to keep the hosts off the scoreboard.

The Cardinals finished with a 19-15 shot margin while St. Mary's posted a 5-2 corner kick advantage for the contest.

Both Wirtz and Halperin ended the game with 10 saves each.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Saturday, September 29 when St. Mary's travels to Western Maryland to battle Frostburg State University in Capital Athletic Conference action at 2:00 pm.
