Lyons Run Undefeated Streak to 10 with 5-0 Victory Over Simmons
NORTON, Mass.- The nationally-ranked Wheaton College women's soccer team ran its undefeated streak to 10 games thanks to a 5-0 victory over visiting Simmons College in Thursday's non-conference game at Mirrione Stadium.
The Blue and White, which posted its fifth shutout in its last six games to improve to 8-0-2, is ranked 16th in the country and tied for third in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). The Sharks slipped to 4-5.
Senior Cassey Muse (Candia, N.H./Central), who tallied the Lyons' first two goals of the afternoon, is one point shy of becoming the program's ninth 100-point scorer. Sophomore Lauren Corigliano (Roselle Park, N.J./Roselle Park) tacked on her team-best seventh goal of the fall and also assisted Muse's second marker.
Muse's 14th-minute goal proved to be the lone marker of the opening half, which came off a penalty kick following a visitor handball. The second frame was a different story, as the Lyons rattled off four goals during a 14:07 stretch to put the game out of reach.
Muse scored off a crossing pass from Corigliano at 48:35. Just over five minutes later, Corigliano deked a Simmons player in the box and deposited her left-footed shot into the lower right corner of the net.
Wheaton's final two goals came just 1:29 apart, including when freshman Alyssa Gilman (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional South) headed home a corner offering from sophomore Laila Razzaghi (Ringoes, N.J./Princeton Day School) for her first collegiate goal.
Freshman Cat Amick (Vashon, Wash./Vashon Island) made the score 5-0 when she directed a perfectly-placed shot over the outstretched reach of the Shark keeper and into the back of the net.
Freshman goalie Ali Hinton (Lafayette, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) made four saves in 71:45 for the win, while Simmons freshman Briana Hayes (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) stopped two shots in the same amount of time.
Taking the game's five corner kicks, the hosts also held a 19-5 advantage in shots.
On Saturday, the Lyons return to New England Women's and Men's Athletic (NEWMAC) play against visiting Mount Holyoke College at 1:00 p.m.
