Lillegraven and Steimle Score as Washington U. Wins at Webster, 2-0
Fenton, Mo., September 27, 2012 — The No. 11 ranked Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team scored a goal in each half en route to a 2-0 victory at Webster University on Thursday night at the St. Louis Soccer Park in Fenton, Mo.
Washington University, which improved its overall record to 8-1, opens University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Sunday, Sept. 30, at Carnegie Mellon University. Game time is set for 11 a.m. (ET) in Pittsburgh, Pa.
The first half was evenly played the opening 30 minutes, but Washington U. took advantage of a free kick after Webster's Sarah Drabscek was called for a yellow card. Senior back Nicole Martin sent the free kick into the box on to the head of senior Allie Betley. She flicked the ball with her head to the foot of junior Lauren Steimle, who one-timed it for the first goal of the game. The goal for Steimle was her second of the season.
Washington U. outshot Webster 7-1 in the first half, while putting three shots on goal. Webster was called for six fouls in the opening half, including two yellow cards.
It took the Bears just 13 minutes to extend the lead in the second half on a similar goal to the first half. Sophomore Anna Zambricki made a run down the right wing and sent a cross to the far post that freshman Olivia Lillegraven got a foot on for her first collegiate goal.
Senior goalkeeper Clara Jaques picked up the shutout after facing just two shots. The shutout for Jaques was her third of the year and 22nd of her career, just two shy of setting the all-time school record. Washington U. outshot Webster 15-2 for the game and had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Bear Notebook: Washington University leads the all-time series with Webster, 12-0-2 … The Bears have outscored their opponents 23-6 in the nine games this season, with six shutouts … The road game for Washington U. was its sixth-straight.
