Richard Stockton Escapes Seahawk Women's Soccer with 1-0 Win

St. Mary's City, Md. – A late second half goal lifts the Richard Stockton College Ospreys to a 1-0 non-conference win over the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team Thursday afternoon.

Senior midfielder Rachel Carlson (Mullica Township, N.J./Oakcrest) used her third goal of the season to propel Richard Stockton (9-2-2) to this afternoon's win.  The eventual game-winning goal came at 82:39 following confusion on the field when the head referee did not whistle the play dead despite the sideline official calling Stockton offside.  Carlson put the loose ball into the lower left corner, just past a diving junior goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford).

The Osprey defense kept St. Mary's (4-5-1) of the board in the final minutes by controlling the ball in their offensive side of the field, earning four corner kicks and playing them short to keep play restricted to the corner.

Richard Stockton posted a 14-3 shot advantage while owning an 11-3 margin in corner kicks.

Seniors Liza Sitz (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) and Virginia Williams (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) and junior midfielder Stephanie Schultz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) each took a shot for the Seahawks with Sitz' testing junior keeper Sarah Hinkle (Mullica Hill, N.J./Paul VI).

Wirtz finished the match with six saves while Hinkle ended with her stop on Sitz' shot for her third solo shutout.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Saturday, October 6 when St. Mary's welcomes Marymount (Va.) University to Seahawk Stadium for a Capital Athletic Conference match at 11:30 am as part of the Hawktoberfest at Family Weekend tripleheader.
