Wheaton (Ill.) and Trinity (Texas) play to 1-1 draw in a battle of nationally ranked teams
Wheaton, Ill. – The Wheaton women's soccer team faced off against another nationally-ranked foe on Friday night with the Thunder playing to a 1-1 draw in two overtimes against Trinity University (Texas). Wheaton (10-2-1) entered tonight's match ranked 16th in this week's NSCAA Division III Coaches Poll and Trinity (8-0-2) is second in the same poll.
Wheaton was aggressive in the first half, with a 16-7 advantage in shots, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. It was Trinity that came out the aggressor in the second half and Tigers' aggression paid off with a goal in the 58th minute. Stephanie Segovia turned and put the ball into the net off of an Emily Jorgens assist to give the guests a 1-0 lead. Wheaton continued to attack on its end, paying off with the equalizing goal in the 77th minute. The match-tying goal was score by sophomore Annie Hamilton when she collected a rebound and put back into the net. Hamilton's goal was assisted by freshman Ally Witt.
Wheaton out-shot the Tigers 38-17 in the match, including a 22-10 edge in shots on goal. Thunder goalkeeper Hilary Barreto made nine saves and allowed one goal. Trinity netminder Katie Garrett played superbly in the Tigers' net with 21 saves and one goal allowed.
Wheaton is slated to return to action at 7 PM on Monday night when Concordia-Moorhead visits Joe Bean Stadium for a non-conference match.
