Washington U. Notches 2-2 Double OT Tie Against No. 1 Emory
St. Louis, Mo., October 7, 2012 — Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer teams posted a 2-2 double overtime tie against No. 1 ranked Emory University on Sunday afternoon at Francis Field in St. Louis, Mo.
Emory remains unbeaten with an 8-0-3 record, 1-0-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while Washington U. is 9-1-1, 1-0-1 in the UAA. Brandeis University, Case Western Reserve University, Emory and Washington U. sit in a four-way tie for first place with five conference games remaining.
Washington University held onto the one-goal lead with less than a minute to play, when Veronica Romero gathered a pass from Claudia Rowe and tied the game up with 48.1 seconds remaining. The goal for Romero was her second of the game and fifth of the season. Romero finished the game with four shots, including three on goal.
Emory outshot Washington U. 20-12, including a 9-2 mark in overtime. The Eagle also had a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Clara Jaques made four saves and played the entire 110 minutes in net for Washington U. Senior back Nicole Martin anchored the back line for Washington U. making two team saves.
Washington University outshot Emory 4-2 in the opening 45 minutes of play, with each team having a shot on goal. The Bears lone opportunity in the first half came at the 16:59 mark when junior Jess Johnson slipped through the Emory defense and fired a shot that just got over the head of Emory goalkeeper Erica Stein. Emory had a golden opportunity in the 28th minute when Charlotte Butker's shot to the near corner got past Jaques but was cleared out by Martin for the team save.
Emory put the pressure on to start the second half, and nearly took the lead following a shot by Romero that was cleared off the line by Martin for her second team save of the game.
After a scoreless opening 58 minutes of play, the two teams traded goals in a span of 62 seconds. After Washington U. was called for a foul near midfield, Romero gathered a free kick from junior Lauren Gorodetsky and beat Jacques with a shot to the near corner.
Washington U. answered right back taking advantage of a foul by Emory near the corner. Junior Kate Doyle sent the free kick to the far post that was not cleared out by the Eagles. Senior Lauren Clatch gathered the loose ball and got a foot on the ball to tie the score at 1-1 at 59:11. The goal for Clatch was her first of the season and third of her career.
Sophomore Tessa Klumpp gave the Bears a 2-1 lead in the 67th minute when she fired a shot just outside the 18 that snuck past Emory goalkeeper Kaele Leonard to the far post. The goal for Klumpp was the first of her career.
Washington U. continues its five-game homestand with a pair of conference contests at Francis Field next weekend. The Bears host New York University on Friday, Oct. 12 at 5:30 p.m., followed by a home game against No. 22 ranked Brandeis University on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 11 a.m.. Both games will be broadcast live on Bear Sports Network.
