Bulldogs and Boxers Share the Spoils in Exciting 2-2 Women's Soccer Draw
The University of Redlands women's soccer program battled through 110 minutes of action against the Pacific University (OR) Boxers on the opening night of the 2012 campaign, but came away with a hard-fought tie against the regional foe. While each team owned a lead at one point in the match, the contest ended in a 2-2 draw after double overtime.
Despite falling behind 0-1 midway through the first half, the Bulldogs held a 14-3 advantage in the shot column.
Behind senior midfielder Meghan King (Portland, OR), the Maroon and Gray came out firing in the second half. Twenty minutes into the action, King slotted a ball into the middle of the penalty box where senior midfielderRheana Bales (Issaquah, WA) one-timed it past the Boxer goalkeeper. Less than ten minutes later, Redlands drew a penalty kick, and once again it was King who stepped up by burying the pressure shot into the top right corner for the Maroon and Gray's 2-1 lead.
However, the advantage was short-lived, as Pacific notched the tying goal with just 13:53 to play in the second frame.
With the game knotted at the end of regulation, freshman midfielderSavannah Laursen (Boise, ID) led the charge in the first overtime period, providing a spark off the bench for the Bulldog attack. While creating multiple goal-scoring chances and notching 12 total shots in the two overtime stanzas, the U of R could not find the back of the net, leading to the 2-2 final score line.
Starting senior goalkeeper Linzey Smith (Anaheim Hills, CA) notched one save in the first half, while junior goalkeeper Sabrina Grandke-Bawab(Kirkland, WA) tallied three saves during the final 65 minutes.
Redlands (0-0-1) looks to record its first victory of the year on September 9, when it hosts another Northwest Conference foe in Lewis & Clark College (OR) at 10 a.m.
