Medaille Women Prevail in Double OT Thriller Against D'Youville

More news about: Medaille women's team

BUFFALO, NY - The Medaille College women's soccer team scored a goal in the 109th minute in double overtime from senior Joey Ruderman to outlast crosstown rival D'Youville College (2-1) in a thrilling and critical AMCC matchup.

The Lady Mavs would open the scoring in the 28th minute when Breanna Hyman took a perfect pass from Candis Kapuscinski that got her behind the back line of the Spartan defense where she beat the goalkeeper cleanly to grab a (1-0) lead.  It was a lead that the Lady Mavs would hold onto heading into halftime.

Coming out of the locker room D'Youville carried the run of play which would pay off in the 60th minute when they cashed in on a corner kick attempt as Kayla Hartnett headed a nicely played ball into the back of the net to even the score at (1-1).

Neither team would be able to capitalize on chances over the final thirty minutes of regulation which propelled the game into overtime.  The Lady Mavs had a pair of good chances in the first overtime period but to no avail as the teams headed into a second overtime knotted at one goal apiece.

The second overtime would see three early chances for D'Youville all of which were turned aside, two saved by keeper Denay O'Connor who finished with (8) saves, and one good opportunity which was blocked by a Medaille defender.

The tide would change when Katie Botsford gained possession of the ball near midfield and pushed a beautiful through ball onto the foot of Ruderman who beat the Spartan goalie for the game winner.  Which set off a raucous celebration on a cold autumn evening.

The win evens the Lady Mavs overall record at (7-7-0) while they improve to (5-1-0) in AMCC play, which is currently good for second place in the standings.  They will square off with La Roche College in Pittsburgh, PA on Saturday (10/13) at 1:00pm in another critical conference matchup.
