Eagles' Early Attack Defeats Inferno
MILWAUKEE -- Host Alverno College was unable to upset Edgewood College Saturday afternoon, and lost to the visiting Eagles, 7-1, at a cold and rainy Alverno Field.
The Northern Athletics Conference's top scorer, Elaine Gerry, netted a pair of goals in the game's first seven minutes to put the Eagles (13-2, 9-1 NAC) up early, and the visitors rode the momentum to a 3-0 halftime lead.
Edgewood added two more quick scores in the opening minutes of the second period before the Inferno (4-11, 0-9 NAC) finally got on the board with a goal by Nava Moniriarani in the 58th minute.
The junior midfielder took the ball near the end line on the right side and rocketed the ball to the left corner of the goal past the Eagles' goalkeeper for her eighth goal of the season.
However, the Eagles added two more goals in the final fourth of the game for the 7-1 final.
After the Inferno faced the league's top two teams in the same week, the team heads to Rockford College for its next competition on Wednesday. Both the Inferno and Regents (0-11, 0-9 NAC) are still seeking their first conference victory of the season. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
